Isis originated as an Egyptian goddess of love, magic, and protection but would later come to be worshiped throughout the Greco-Roman world. First named Aset, or “Goddess of the Throne,” during the Old Kingdom (c. 2686–2181 BCE) for the throne that often crowns her head, Isis resurrected her brother and lover Osiris after he was slain by Set, God of chaos, and gave birth to the falcon-headed Horus, God of Kingship and the sky. Thus was Isis divine mother to living pharaohs. She aided the dead in entering the afterlife as she had resurrected Osiris, Lord of the Underworld, and was invoked in healing spells amongst the people as she had restored her consort’s body. In the New Kingdom (c. 1550–1070 BCE), Isis took on the attributes of goddesses such as Hathor, whose horned sun disk crown now adorns the head of Isis as well. As her worship spread, Isis absorbed the traits of feminine deities throughout the known world— Artemis, Aphrodite, Diana, Athena, Demeter, and Hekate—becoming a truly universal Goddess!
