Akhenaten was known for abandoning Egyptian monotheism and replacing all of the gods with Aten, an all-powerful deity who began as an aspect of the sun god Ra. Aten's place as the singular divine force in Egypt waned upon the death of Akhenaten and his son, the famed Tutankhamun, restored the Egyptian gods to their glory. Aten's worship was but a blip in the thousands of years that spanned the dynasties of ancient Egypt, but this time gave us such luminaries as Nefertiti, Ankhesenamun, and, of course, Tutankhamun himself. You may also recognize this image from its inclusion in Laurie Cabot's 1989 classic book, Power of the Witch (Delta, 1990). It was one of the inspirations for her empowering Egyptian Sun meditation.
