The scribe of the Gods, Thoth is the Egyptian god of wisdom, writing, science, magic, art, and the moon and also takes part in the judgment of the dead. As a god of writing and communication, he is often compared to the Greek god Hermes. Thoth is depicted as a standing man with the head of an ibis, an ibis itself, or as a seated baboon, though his man-bird form is the one best known outside of Egypt. His name was considered so important that it was often incorporated into the names of the Pharaohs. The wife of Thoth was sometimes said to be Maat, goddess of justice, and so too did Thoth become associated with the concepts of balance and equilibrium. He was known to stand at the weighing of the soul in the afterlife, as it was Thoth who would have kept record of all one’s deeds in life. Witches often call upon Thoth in his capacity as a god of magic and the written word.
