Sobek is the Egyptian crocodile deity modeled after one of the Nile river’s most feared predators—and with good reason. According to his visage, he was seen as a fierce protector against the dangers of the Nile. He was a god of fertility, military might, and the power of the pharaohs. The worship of Sobek spanned vast periods of time, from the Old Kingdom (c. 2686 – 2181 BCE) to Roman Egypt (c. 30 BCE – 350 CE). Because he was a mighty protector of Egypt, crocodiles themselves were seen as incarnations of Sobek on Earth and were often mummified and displayed in his temples as sacred guardians.
