With his imagery dating as far back as prehistoric Egypt, the long-feared Set, also known as Seth and Sutekh, is the god of deserts, storms, chaos, violence, and foreigners. He may have been worshipped early on as an oasis god of the desert and, with his mighty strength, aided the sun god Ra in his fight against Apep, the serpent of chaos. In the most central Egyptian myth, it is the brutal Set who murders and mutilates his brother Osiris, leaving Isis to reassemble the pieces and bring the God back to life. This resurrection also resulted in the birth of the falcon-headed Horus, God of the sky and of kingship, and so Horus, in turn, sought revenge against Set, with many of the myths of Egypt being stories of their countless battles. Unlike other Egyptian gods, and perhaps due to his association with foreigners, the head of Set is like no animal known, though it is said that it could be an amalgam of several creatures. This underscores Set’s role as the “other,” a force to be feared—though he was also worshiped by those who would court chaos and violence.
