Sekhmet is the Egyptian Warrior Goddess in the form of a Lioness who brings destruction to the enemies of the Sun god Ra—whose daughter she is said to be. She is often crowned with the sun disk of Ra encircled by the Uraeus serpent. Sekhmet is consort to the creator god Ptah and is associated with healing, medicine, and disease (since one cannot really understand health without understanding illness). Her priests would travel the land to bring healing to all those who needed it. Sekhmet’s name means: “She who is powerful” or “the One who loves Maat.” She was a protector of the pharaohs of Egypt in life. In death, she ushered these kings into the afterlife.
