The Taoist master knows that peace comes from within. Once, a village was being taken over by a group of bandits. There was a Temple in the village, and all monks fled to the hills. Only the master stayed behind. When the Leader of the bandits entered the temple he found the master sitting quietly in contemplation. He screamed: “Open your eyes, you old fool. Don't you know who I am? I can kill you without blinking an eye.” The Master replied, “Put away your sword, you young fool. Don't you know who I am ? I can die without blinking an eye.” The story tells that the bandit put away his sword, bowed to the master and walked away. The temple was left undisturbed. Violence can be defeated by the power of peace, but only when directed by wisdom and intelligence.
