Khnum is the ram-headed Egyptian god of fertility as he is considered to be the original source of the Nile River and, like the cow-goddess Hathor, is said to also have the power to both fill and flood that river most crucial the survival of life in everyday Egypt. With the flooding of the Nile bringing silt and clay with its waters, so is Khnum said to be a potter of the gods, forming the bodies of human children from the clay of the river, infusing life into their forms. This established Khnum as a creator said to have existed from the earliest times of Egypt, and some myths describe him as the creator of all things upon his potter’s wheel.
