Son of Isis and Osiris, the mighty falcon-headed god Horus is the divine child within the Egyptian holy trinity. Worshipped from the earliest times of Egypt, the falcon itself was seen as a celestial deity that represented the heavens that rule over Earth. With his left eye symbolizing the sun and his right eye the moon, so was Horus revered as a god of the sky and of kingship. He was venerated from prehistoric Egypt right through to Roman Egypt, with Egyptians syncretizing Horus with the Roman Sun god Apollo. Horus is often portrayed with the red and white crown of the pharaohs of the united upper and lower kingdoms of Egypt, which is a symbol of his rulership over the lands. The traits of Horus and the Sun god Ra merge to form Ra-Horakhty, Horus of the two horizons. In this form, Horus is crowned with the solar disc of Ra, itself frequently encircled by a cobra. The well-known symbol of the Eye of Horus remains a powerful symbol of protection throughout the world.
