Ptah was one of the Egyptian creator gods said to bring the world into being through the power of his word. Consider the biblical line in John 1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” That statement can find its source in such deities as Ptah, who, according to ancient texts, is said to have crafted the world and given life to all of the gods. He is lord of truth, eternity, justice, and ceremony. Unlike many Egyptian gods, but similar to Isis and Osiris, Ptah is typically portrayed in human form and is represented with both green skin and divine beard. He is shown holding a scepter bearing the three sacred signs of the Was (animal head), Ankh (key of life), and Djed (sacred pillar). As creator of the universe, Ptah is also the patron of craftspeople, such as sculptors and metalworkers. Thus, the Greeks saw Ptah as a manifestation of Hephaestus, the blacksmith of the gods.
