The creator god Amun-Ra began as the deity Amun, depicted as a bearded man, who rose to such prominence among the Egyptian worshippers of the city of Thebes that his power extended throughout the land—at which point he nearly eclipsed, and later became fused with, the great sun god Ra. In the ancient Hymn to Amun-Ra, he was called “Lord of truth, father of the gods, maker of men, creator of all animals, Lord of things that are, creator of the staff of life.” Amun-Ra has been portrayed as similar to both Horus and Ra-Horakhty, with his image being that of a man with a falcon head crowned with the cobra-encircled sun disk of Ra. Amun-Ra became King of the Gods of Egypt, so widely revered that his worship could almost be considered monotheistic. He is often called upon to aid the poor, the distressed, and the downtrodden.
