In Ancient Egypt, Min was a god of fertility, both for humans and for the crops. Min’s masculine nature is highlighted by the enormous penis jutting out from his body. Egyptians would carry statues of Min into the fields to protect and bless them, with the first fruits of harvest offered to the deity in gratitude. Min was also worshipped by miners and hunters of the Eastern desert. At the festival of Min, the queens of Egypt would take on the role of the “mother of Min,” in order to pass the lifeforce of the royal ka onto the next king.
