Bastet, also known as Bast, is an Egyptian Goddess of good luck and protection who was worshiped as early as the Second Dynasty (2890 BCE). She is known as a protector of pregnant women, defender of the kings of Lower Egypt, guardian against evil spirits and disease, and warrior against the evil serpent god Apep—declared enemy to the Sun God Ra. Bastet is said to be daughter to Ra and the goddess Isis and was originally a fierce, solar leonine goddess, not all that unlike Sekhmet. However, she grew kinder as the cat itself came to be domesticated and revered by the Egyptians around 1500 BCE, and she later developed more lunar aspects with her designation “eye of the moon.” It is no wonder that Witches so love a Goddess associated with cats and the moon!
